2018 Black Cameron Shiraz highly rated by James Halliday again !
Shiraz is certainly one of the hallmarks of the Boat O’Craigo stable. This is due in equal parts to terroir, vineyard management and winemaking. We are lucky to have a very unique vineyard in Kangaroo Ground. A volcano in a former life, this is one of the highest vineyard sites in the Yarra Valley. North-facing and with plenty of air flow, the vines get loads of natural sunlight and, being on a gradual slope means we can control irrigation. Frankly, it is the ideal site for ripening warmer varieties like Shiraz, Cabernet and Grenache. A site naturally resistant to pest and disease, the vines are carefully nurtured throughout the growing season with yields managed to ideal levels. We always hand pick and hand sort the fruit and our winemaking is small batch and labour intensive focussing on highlighting the natural flavours of the fruit, using only premium French oak and staying true to regional characteristics. Our shiraz has scored between 93 and 97 points for the last 4 years and above 90 points on all but one vintage since the maiden vintage in 2003. It is no wonder that Four Pillars Gin specifically sought out our Shiraz fruit when they launched their world famous Bloody Shiraz Gin and have purchased shiraz from us every year since !
