Celebrating Beaujolais Day: A Toast to Gamay in the Yarra Valley
Every November, wine enthusiasts around the world look forward to International Beaujolais Day — a celebration of Beaujolais Nouveau, the first wines of the new harvest, made exclusively from the Gamay grape. Here in the Yarra Valley, we embrace the day by highlighting the unique expressions of Gamay grown on our local terroir.
The Allure of the Gamay Grape
Gamay is known for its light body and naturally high acidity, producing wines that are bright, fresh and fruit-forward: red berry fruits (cherry, strawberry, raspberry), floral aromas of violet or peony, a subtle earthiness, and light, silky tannins.
Gamay in the Yarra Valley
While most associated with France's Beaujolais region, Gamay has found a welcoming home in our cool climate, where slow ripening enhances bright acidity and complex flavour. Yarra Valley Gamay often shows enhanced freshness, balanced acidity, and layered fruit notes like plum or cranberry alongside classic cherry and raspberry.
